Pianist/composer Kate Williams has gained a reputation as both a distinctive writer and performer. Each one of her CDs (nine to date) has been released to critical acclaim, and her Four Plus Three ensemble’s album collaboration with singer Georgia Mancio won ‘Album of the Year’ at the 2020 Parliamentary Jazz Awards.
Her current quartet plays a wide range of tunes including those by Emily Remler, Bill Evans and Hank Jones as well as originals by Kate, and we’re excited that this evening’s guest front-liner is acclaimed flautist, composer and arranger Gareth Lockrane.
Kate has early-career links to the city (gaining her undergraduate Music degree at UEA) and long-standing patrons of the club will likely recall Kate’s numerous performances for us at the Red Lion and the Green Man. This will be her first visit to the club since 2014 however, so don’t miss this chance to catch her excellent quartet in action!
Some recent live performances are available to watch here, and you can also hear an example of Kate’s writing for strings in this spellbinding arrangement of Love For Sale from her ‘Four Plus Three’ album.
“Williams has a quality rare among jazz composers: a musical vocabulary that’s all her own”
